The European Commission has unveiled its new bioeconomy strategy aimed at promoting green growth, competitiveness, and resilience across Europe.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On 27 November 2025<\/strong>, the Commission adopted the Strategic Framework for a Competitive and Sustainable EU Bioeconomy<\/strong>, designed to chart the course toward a cleaner, more competitive, and more resilient European economy. By utilising renewable biological resources and providing alternatives to critical raw materials, the EU aims to move toward a more circular and decarbonised economy while reducing dependence on fossil imports.<\/p>\n

But What Exactly Is the Bioeconomy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The bioeconomy revolves around the production and sustainable use of biomass<\/strong>. A biomass\u2011based economy forms part of the broader bioeconomy, referring to both food\u2011 and non\u2011food\u2011related processing of biomass.
\nIn essence:<\/p>\n

The bioeconomy includes all activities that use biological resources to create added value.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The bioeconomy offers Europe the opportunity to:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • strengthen economic and social resilience,<\/li>\n
  • replace fossil\u2011based materials and products,<\/li>\n
  • create new jobs,<\/li>\n
  • and take a leading role in the global transition toward clean industries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Through this new strategy, the EU supports activities that deliver sustainable, practical solutions based on biological resources across sectors such as:<\/p>\n

    • agriculture<\/li>\n
    • forestry<\/li>\n
    • fisheries<\/li>\n
    • aquaculture<\/li>\n
    • biomass processing<\/li>\n
    • biomanufacturing<\/li>\n
    • biotechnology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      A Coherent and Simplified Regulatory Framework<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      The European Commission is working to create a simplified, coherent regulatory environment<\/strong> that rewards circular and sustainable business models while safeguarding EU\u2011level safety standards. It also aims to ensure that current and future EU funding is channelled into bio\u2011based technologies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      To stimulate private investment, the Commission proposes establishing a Bioeconomy Investment Group<\/strong>, responsible for developing a pipeline of bankable bio-based projects.<\/p>\n

      The Commission has identified high\u2011potential markets<\/strong> for bio\u2011based materials and technologies, including:<\/p>\n

      • bio\u2011based plastics<\/li>\n
      • fibres and textiles<\/li>\n
      • chemicals<\/li>\n
      • fertilisers<\/li>\n
      • pesticides<\/li>\n
      • construction materials<\/li>\n
      • biorefineries<\/li>\n
      • advanced fermentation<\/li>\n
      • long\u2011term storage of biogenic carbon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        The strategy also aims to increase demand for bio\u2011based content in products, including through legislative targets.<\/p>\n

        Additionally, the Commission proposes the creation of a Bio\u2011based Europe Alliance<\/strong>, which would unite EU companies to jointly procure \u20ac10 billion worth of bio\u2011based solutions by 2030.<\/p>\n

        What Activities Will the New Strategy Support?<\/strong><\/h1>\n

        • Boosting bio\u2011based innovation<\/strong> through mixed public\u2013private investments and simplified regulation<\/li>\n
        • Accelerating approval processes<\/strong> for innovative solutions, especially for small businesses<\/li>\n
        • Increasing investment<\/strong> in bio\u2011based technologies and establishing a dedicated investment group<\/li>\n
        • Growing demand<\/strong> for bio\u2011based content in products by setting targets in relevant legislation<\/li>\n
        • Creating a European Bioeconomy Alliance<\/strong> to support joint procurement of bio\u2011based solutions<\/li>\n
        • Advancing circularity<\/strong> and increasing the value of secondary biomass (e.g., agricultural waste, by\u2011products, organic waste)<\/li>\n
        • Launching initiatives to reward sustainable practices<\/strong> among farmers and foresters, such as:\n

          • soil protection,<\/li>\n
          • carbon sink enhancement,<\/li>\n
          • and sustainable biomass use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            The EU Bioeconomy Strategy emphasises:<\/p>\n

            • responsible sourcing of biomass<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n
            • the management of forests, soils, water, and ecosystems within ecological limits<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Promoting circularity and increasing the value of secondary biomass remain central pillars of the strategy.<\/p>\n

              Examples of Bio\u2011based Products<\/strong><\/h2>\n

              • Bio\u2011based chemicals derived from algae, used in pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and industrial applications<\/li>\n
              • Bio\u2011based plastics, increasingly used in packaging and automotive components<\/li>\n
              • Growing demand for bio\u2011based construction materials, textile fibres, and fertilisers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
